WNBA All-Star Game Predictions
Who will compete against Team USA?
WNBA ALL-STAR Game Predictions
The WNBA will announce the roster for the 2024 All-Star Game tonight 9:00 PM EST. I decided to go ahead and pick the roster based off who I think should make the team.
For those that don’t know how the selections work, The selection of the All-Stars is a combination of voting by fans (50 percent of the vote), current WNBA players (25 percent) and a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters (25 percent).
After the initial voting period, complete with input from these three groups, the top 10 vote-getters will automatically be named to participate in the 2024 AT&T WNBA All-Star Game. Any top 10 vote-getter who has not already been named to the USA Women’s National Team 5-on-5 roster will automatically be assigned to Team WNBA. They will then select the final 2 players to round out the roster.
The WNBA All-Stars will take on Team USA on Saturday, July 20, at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT on ABC.
Roster Predictions
GUARDS
Caitlin Clark (Indiana Fever), Arike Ogunbowale (Dallas Wings), Kayla McBride (Minnesota Lynx), Skylar Diggins-Smith (Seattle Storm).
This guard group was very tough to pick. Regardless if you think Caitlin Clark, which she is, I still think the WNBA has to do everything in their power to make sure she is a part of this game. Arike Ogunbowale is all but a lock given her numbers (23.9 PPG, 4.7 REB/G, 5.0 AST/G) even though you could argue the efficiency isn’t there. Kayla McBride got off to a red-hot start, and even with her having cooled off over the last couple weeks, she is still shooting 44% from 3. Diggins-Smith is my last selection. She has been playing much better lately (so have the Storm), and she is top 5 in assist per game right now.
Forwards
Aliyah Boston (Indiana Fever), Angel Reese (Chicago Sky), Dearica Hamby (LA Sparks), Nneka Ogwumike (Seattle Storm), DeWanna Bonner (Connecticut Sun), Jonquel Jones (NY Liberty)
This group was very tough to pick. Boston and Reese will be towards the top of the fan voting and after a tough start to the season, both have come into their own. Neither are close to their potential, but I think both end up making the roster. Dearica Hamby is a great story and is having a career year. She’s seen her scoring average jump from 8.9 PPG to 18.4 PPG. She is an amazing story and is a lock to this roster. Same goes for Ogwumike, Bonner, and Jones. After taking some time to find her way last year, Jones is looking like her old self to start the year.
Final 2
Ezi Magbegor (F) Seattle Storm and Brionna Jones (F) Connecticut Sun
I know I went with two more forwards, but when you look at who is left in the pool, I just don’t see anyone you can put in over them. My next choice would be Dijonai Carrington who has been a key piece for the Sun this year as well. You could also make the argument for Natasha Cloud who is 2nd in the W with 7.1 assist per game or Allisha Gray of the Dream, but I just don’t love rewarding guards from teams that are underperforming.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I would there are 7 locks to make the roster. For me, I don’t see a world where Clark, Hamby, McBride, Jones, Ogwumike, Bonner, and Ogunbowale aren’t selected. That would leave five spots for the rest of the field. I think that last two forward spots are a toss up and I can easily see a world where both Reese and Boston, don’t make it. Either way, this was a fun exercise and I can’t wait to see who ends up getting chosen.
