WNBA Power Rankings (7/1-7/7)
Which Contenders will separate themselves?
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our “Daily Bucket”. Every Monday we will put together our weekly WNBA Power Rankings. Instead of ranking them 1-12. We will rank them in tiers based off their performances so far this season.
TIER 1 - THE CONTENDERS
NY Liberty - 17-4 - This week (1-1 W vs. Minnesota, L at Fever)
Minnesota Lynx - 15-6 - This week (L @ Liberty, L vs. Sun, W vs. Mystics)
Las Vegas Aces - 13-7 This week (L @ Sparks, W vs. Dallas)
Seattle Storm - 14-7 This week (L vs. Chicago, W vs. Chicago)
Connecticut Sun - 17-4 This week (W @ Mercury, W @ Lynx, W vs. Atlanta)
As we inch closer to the Olympic break, there doesn’t seem to be much of a difference between these five teams. Each team besides the Sun took a turn losing to a team outside of the tier this week. After struggling for a couple of weeks, Connecticut responded by going 3-0 this week. Napheesa Collier got hurt in the Lynx’s loss to the Sun and was missing in their win over the Mystics. If I had to pick right now, I would choose a Finals rematch of Liberty vs. Aces.
Tier 3 - The Middle
Phoenix Mercury - 11-10 (L vs. Sun, vs. W @ Wings, W @ Sparks)
Just another week for the Mercury. They lost to the Sun at home and then responded by taking care of business on the road against the two worst teams in the league. How they play on the road against the Sun and Fever this week will be telling.
Tier 4 - Moving on Up!
Chicago Sky - 8-12 (W @ Dream, W @ Storm, L @ Storm)
Indiana Mercury - 9-13 (L @ Aces, W @ Liberty)
Chicago and Indiana both earned the right to move up this week, led by their rookie sensations. Both Clark and Reese put on performances for the ages. Clark had the first-ever triple-double, and Reese set the double-double record for a rookie this week. As these two have continued to improve, so have their teams. While they may only be fighting for a playoff spot this season, the league has to know it is in good hands for years to come.
Tier 4 - The Race for Break
Atlanta Dream, Washington Mystics, LA Sparks, Dallas Wings
Atlanta had just started to play better when they lost Jordin Canada to injury again. The Sparks and Wings both had wins this week. Washington continues to struggle to remain healthy. These four teams can't get to the break quickly enough.
