WNBA Weekly Tier Rankings
Are the Aces back for good?
WNBA POWER RANKINGS (7/1/2024)
TIER 1 - THE FAVORITES
NY Liberty - 16-3 - This week (1-1 L vs. Minnesota, W vs. Atlanta)
Minnesota Lynx - 14-4 - This week (1-1 W @ NY, L @ Dallas, W @ Chicago)
These two teams actually played each other in the Commissioners Cup Championship game earlier this week with Minnesota coming away with the road win and prize money. In Courtney Vandersloot’s first game, the Liberty struggled to find a rhythm offensively and that lasted into their game Sunday before they turned it around in the 2nd half to beat Atlanta by 6 at home. Minnesota followed up that impressive performance with a road loss at the struggling Dallas Wings, and then a come from behind win at Chicago on Sunday.
Tier 2 - Close…Check in Next Week
Las Vegas Aces - 10-6 This week (2-0 W @ Chicago, W @Mystics)
Seattle Storm - 12-6 This week (2-0 W vs. Fever, W vs. Dallas)
Both these teams are playing much better as of late, and seem to be hitting their stride. For Vegas, getting Chelsea Gray back has been massive, even if it doesn’t show up in the box score consistently yet. Seattle has rattled off 3 straight since losing to Aces, and will continue a long homestand this week.
Tier 3 - The Middle
Connecticut Sun - 14-4 This week (W @ Mystics, L vs. Atlanta)
I know the Sun were playing extremely well prior to the last couple weeks, but they struggled again this week. They needed overtime to beat the Mystics and then loss to the struggling Atlanta Dream at home. Without better outside shooting, they will continue to struggle keeping up with the top teams in the W.
Tier 4 - Make Up Your Mind!
Phoenix Mercury - 9-9 This week (W vs. Spark, vs. L Indiana)
Indiana Mercury - 8-12 This (L @ Seattle, W @ Phoenix)
Phoenix continues to show flashes, but have yet to pull away from the middle of the pack. Their loss at home on Sunday to Indiana was the Fever’s first road win over a .500 or better team this season. The Fever had an up and down week, but Caitlin Clark put together one of the better performances by a rookie this year on Sunday vs. the Mercury.
Tier 4 - The Race for Paige
Atlanta Dream, Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky, Washington Mystics, LA Sparks, Dallas Wings
All these teams have showed flashes, but are still struggling to win or be competitive on a consistent basis. After a tough stretch, Atlanta had the most impressive win of the week by going on the road and winning at the Sun. Chicago is looking like they have a future star in Angel Reese, but still they cannot closeout games. The Mystics, Sparks and Wings have had some nice wins over the last week but, are a ways away.
